Kakeru’s journey from Japan to the U.S. began in August of 2023, as he’d decided on a study abroad program in Oregon. His dream of living in the States trumped his anxiety; but when the realities of moving sank in, Kakeru’s confidence quickly faded.

“Things weren’t going well,” Kakeru shared. “I was filled with so much anxiety and hated waking up every day. I couldn’t even face people.”

Kakeru wondered if the next year would be any better. After winter break, he connected with a friend in his same study abroad program. His friend mentioned he was learning about Jesus and the Christian faith; Kakeru was drawn immediately. They exchanged contact information and Kakeru soon connected with Dawnita, IFI Salem staff.

“She became the person who introduced me to Jesus and played a big role in my life,” Kakeru said.

Kakeru began studying the Bible and attending church every week with Dawnita. Slowly but surely, Kakeru grew in his understanding of the Lord Jesus. He then started reading the Bible for himself and praying every night before bed.

“I especially like to pray,” Kakeru shared. “The first time I ever prayed, it felt like something was watching over me.”

Gradually, Kakeru felt his instability wash away, trading it for a joy he’d never experienced.

“The Christian faith is one of love,” Kakeru explained. “Even when we’re at our lowest, God watches over us. And if you confess your sins, God will forgive you. I feel that the power of God has always been at work in my life, and I’m thankful to grow in my knowledge of Him.”
