In 2024, the leadership of IFI was passed from Rich Mendola, IFI CEO, to Ryan Finke, the leader chosen to take IFI forward in the coming years.
Ryan was already at IFI, being an internal hire. He worked on the National Communications Team as their Director and later as the Strategy Director. He has had plenty of experience on the field, as well, volunteering in campus work with internationals in Cincinnati before moving to Columbus.
During the Passing of the Torch ceremony, Ryan highlighted Rich’s service, saying, “We take a moment to honor and celebrate Rich Mendola’s 32 years of unwavering dedication and passion for international student ministry. Throughout his journey with IFI, Rich has been a faithful steward of God’s mission, inspiring countless individuals—myself included—to continue reaching out to international students. His influence has been profound, and his legacy will endure as we continue this important work.”
IFI’s story can only be attributed to God’s vision and purpose. Fifty years ago, the number of international students in the United States was minimal, but today, our nation has become the premier destination for higher education, hosting more than one million international students. This remarkable growth has opened doors for connection and cultural exchange, all thanks to people like Rich and the dedicated volunteers who walk alongside international students with warmth and understanding.
Ryan’s journey began in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he first witnessed the impact of international student ministry. Growing up as one of four kids, he remembers when his parents welcomed Albert, a student from Spain, into their home. He became like a member of the family—sharing their meals, attending school with them, and leaving a lasting impression that became clear only when he wept as he departed for home. That early experience of hospitality showed Ryan the power of community and inclusion. Years later, he had the chance to experience reverse hospitality while studying in China. A local family there took him in, helping him navigate a new culture, and extended the same kindness that had touched Albert in his home so many years before.
“As I step into this role, I’m filled with gratitude for the love and friendship of my wife, who supports me in this work, and with a sense of purpose for the journey ahead. My vision as I lead IFI is to listen deeply to God’s direction and honor the organization’s mission. Our goals over the coming years are clear and inspired: to empower our volunteers and the international students we serve, to continue investing in the spirit of hospitality, and to mentor students so that they might become world-changers in their own communities and beyond.” – Ryan
